Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor in the world by most of the top-ranked professionals. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His grandpa introduced him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to pickup every little thing he could about the game. Phil would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not let the negative feedback from other people annihilate his dream of becoming one of the best poker competitors on the planet.
He began competing intently after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning few years for Phil were a learning opportunity and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he defeated quite a few of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to hard work and a continuing love for poker. Phil says that he is picking up skills every day and is quite abashed about his success. Phil admits to making blunders every single session of poker and always strives to get better.
Although Ivey has won some big tournaments, he prefers destroying cash games on a normal basis.
