Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he loved taking part in numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to play some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention more on the game.
The real improvement in his abilities happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often challenge one another. He had access into a number of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his cunning thinking techniques. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world today. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
